This seven‑week internship introduces students to science communication in a museum setting. Interns join the museum team to facilitate the DeBakey Cell Lab and lead activities in the new Annex, supporting visitors as they conduct hands‑on, bilingual (English & Spanish) experiments.

High school interns are paired with honor college interns who share similar interests, providing mentorship and guidance related to academic and career development. The museum offers training and resources to support this mentorship role. A cell biology-related project will be assigned to each mentor-mentee pair at the beginning of the internship. The main objective of this internship is to develop soft skills such as communication, networking, interpersonal skills, adaptability, problem-solving, and leadership skills required for succeeding in any career.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Interns are expected to deliver an engaging, professional, and educational visitor experience by:

  • Facilitating experiments in the Cell Lab and Annex
  • Maintaining a clean, welcoming, and fully stocked lab environment
  • Communicating complex scientific concepts in accessible terms
  • Serve as docents for The Journey to End Cancer exhibition, training provided
  • Adapting to varied assignments within the museum

Applicants must fulfill the following criteria to apply for the internship

  • Commitment to the internship schedule
  • A minimum age of 15 as of June 15, 2026
  • A GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • A natural curiosity and eagerness to learn
  • An enjoyment in engaging with diverse groups of individuals
  • Interest in developing communication skills
  • Training: First week of June
  • Internship duration: June 15 – July 31
  • Internship hours: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • Professional development on select Saturdays, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
  • Field trips on selected weekdays, hours TBD

In return, the Interns participate in exclusive sessions with professionals from the Texas Medical Center, including experts in genetics, bioinformatics, public health, and related fields. Visits to TMC institutions offer exposure to real-world environments in health and medicine.
