Call Me Mother Experience

On view October 4, 2026 – February 28, 2027

The Call Me Mother Experience (CMME) is an art and awareness initiative that tells the stories behind the Black maternal health crisis. Harris County has the highest pregnancy-related death rate for Black women in the United States, with Black women dying at roughly four times the rate of white women locally.¹ CMME brings together artists to amplify these stories, educate audiences, and champion self-advocacy through art.

Sparked by a poem written by Founder, Curator, and Lead Artist Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton during her miscarriage, this exhibit features new art from artists connected to the issue and collects local stories through pop-up art activations with community members. CMME combines video interviews, short films, visual art, and community-made pieces to create an immersive art installation shared through museums, service organizations, and faith-centered spaces.

The Health Museum serves as the anchor location for this Houston activation, with additional pieces appearing throughout the city during the exhibition run. Visit our website for all the places you can experience Call Me Mother.
