Call Me Mother Experience

The Call Me Mother Experience (CMME) is an art and awareness initiative that tells the stories behind the Black Maternal Health Crisis. Harris County was recently named “The worst place in the US for Black Women to Give Birth”. With maternal death rates almost four times that of their White counterparts, and morbidity rates on the rise, this national collective of artists seeks to amplify, educate, and champion self-advocacy through art.

Sparked by a poem written by Founder, Curator, and Lead Artist, Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton during her miscarriage, this exhibit features new art from impacted artists and works to collect local stories through pop-up art activations with local citizens. CMME consists of video interviews, short films, and visual art that are joined with community-made pieces to offer an immersive art installation to participating communities through museums, service organizations, and faith-centered spaces.

The Health Museum serves as our anchor location for this Houston activation, with additional pieces popping up throughout the city during the exhibition run. Please check out our website for all the places you can find Call Me Mother.
