The story of life is written in a language of four simple letters—A, T, G, and C. On April 25th, 2026, those letters came alive at our Unlocking the Code: DNA Day celebration, a day filled with discovery and wonder for science lovers of all ages.
This date holds a special place in scientific history as National DNA Day, marking both the 1953 discovery of the DNA double helix and the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. Thanks to our sponsor, LONZA, we hosted a memorable event that brought the power of genetics to our community.

Hands-On Discoveries
The day began as participants built colorful DNA candy models to visualize the double helix. From there, a world of technical skill and scientific exploration opened up at stations hosted by our incredible partners:
- UT Health MD Anderson GSBS Outreach lets visitors practice micro pipetting, create DNA Origami, and even craft DNA bracelets based on real bioinformatics runs.
- The Texas Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedical Education helped guests extract their own DNA to take home.
- Space Center Houston explored the fascinating process of decoding DNA.
- The Baylor Department of Genetics hosted a fun and informative “Gene-a-logy” game.
- The Gulf Coast Blood Bank demonstrated the real-world impact of genomics through blood typing genetics.
- The Texas Branch of AALAS offered insights into the important role of animal models in medicine.
- Idea Lab Kids sparked curiosity with a “SPY DNA” forensic investigation.
- Our own Healing Arts Program connected science and wellness with a beautiful “Cranes of Hope” activity.

From Code to Cure
The celebration reached its peak with an inspiring keynote address, “The Power of DNA: Code to Cure,” by Dr. Vrushali Datar. Her talk beautifully wove the day’s activities together, showing how we have moved from reading the candy-coded sequences of the morning to developing life-saving medical cures.
Special Thanks

This event was made possible with the incredible support of our sponsor, LONZA, and all the community partners who shared their time and expertise. Thank you for helping us inspire the next generation of scientists and health professionals.
