This summer in the DeBakey Cell Lab at The Health Museum was unlike any other. The air buzzed with excitement as this pilot internship program kicked off, welcoming bright young minds from schools across the city. Students from DeBakey, Carnegie Vanguard, Bellaire, Charles H. Milby, and South Early College came together to embark on a journey of learning and discovery.
The objective of this program was to spark an interest in STEM fields among the students and to provide them with valuable hands-on experience. The interns were paired with mentors from the University of Houston Honors College, forming meaningful connections that would shape their future careers. Interns also attended professional development sessions led by graduate students and professionals from the prestigious Texas Medical Center.
We are incredibly thankful to Priya Mohabir, Vice President of Youth Development at New York Hall of Science, and Laura Lerman, Director of Expanded Learning and Youth Engagement at California Academy of Sciences, for generously sharing their valuable insights.
Meaningful Six Weeks
This internship program was about more than just traditional education. It was about nurturing essential soft skills in the students. The lab became a ground of learning where creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork flourished. Aside from gaining knowledge about cells and lab procedures, the internship also developed the skills and confidence needed for a successful career in scientific research.
Team Bonding & Camaraderie
Amidst the hum of microscopes and lively discussions, friendships and camaraderie blossomed. Each day brought new challenges and triumphs, and as the summer unfolded, the students transformed – not just as budding scientists but as well-rounded individuals ready to take on the world.
“This internship gave me the opportunity to collaborate, network, and learn new aspects of the health field. It also helped me develop helpful skills such as: public speaking, teamwork, and fine motor skills, which will help me in the long run.”
