Job Title: Summer Camp Guide
Reports to: Assistant Director, Programs
Job Status: Full-time, temporary (June 3 – August 16, 2024)
Classification: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Pay rate: $18 per hour
Location: The Health Museum

Position Summary

The Health Museum’s mission is to foster wonder and curiosity about health, medical science and the human body through a variety of formats including exhibitions and education programs. The Camp Guide delivers innovative camp programming targeting elementary students, in group sizes between 6 and 15 students. Camp Guides are provided with a 12-hour on-site, pre-camp training and given a complete daily activity guide to review three weeks before camp begins. The Museum supplies all equipment and materials to work on camp projects. Camp Guides may engage the campers with brief lectures to students as a whole group, but the emphasis is on employing non-traditional, collaborative learning experiences that entertainingly promote science learning.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers instruction that utilizes an understanding of best practices in informal science education.
  • Creates a learning environment that appeals to the targeted camp audience by encouraging, a safe space for risk-taking, group process, and plays.
  • Effectively manages instructional supplies and materials.
  • Maintains an accurate roster of camp attendance.
  • Works collaboratively with all venue host sites and staff and other Camp Guides to enhance the camper’s experience.
  • Maintains a safe environment and provides high-quality risk management in the classroom.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children ages 5 to 13 and a basic understanding of developmental levels within this age range.
  • Demonstration of some engagement in the arts and/or sciences through volunteering, education, or work.
  • Teaching experience, including curriculum writing, mentoring, tutoring, classrooms, camps, after-school programs, or other informal learning environments.
  • Organized, flexible.
  • Ability to communicate and relate to children of diverse audiences.
  • Commitment to active listening to children.
  • Personality characteristics: energetic, enthusiastic, interested, patient curious, and sense of humor.

The Health Museum and the University of Houston-Downtown have partnered to deliver medical science camps at multiple locations across the greater Houston area. The Camp Guide delivers innovative camp programming targeting elementary students, in group sizes between 6 and 15 students. Camp Guides are provided with a 12-hour on-site, pre-camp training and given a complete daily activity guide to review three weeks before camp begins. The Museum supplies all equipment and materials to work on camp projects.
