Health Education - Public Programing
Discovery Cart Volunteers
Help the exhibits come alive! Staff a mobile information station where Museum guests can choose to briefly interact with a ‘real live’ person inside the exhibits. Carts include a variety of models and demonstrations featuring the circulatory system, respiratory system and general nutrition.
Hands On Health -- Fall Opportunity
Take the Discovery Carts on the road by visiting elementary schools with cart materials for school sponsored Family Science Nights. Must be at least 18, with a valid drivers license and ability to provide own transportation to off-site events (mileage reimbursed).
Requirements for Discovery Cart Placement: Preliminary orientation and an initial one- hour training provide an overview of the carts at the Museum. Interest in health and science a plus. Once trained, volunteers can select two-hour shifts seven days a week.
Health Fair Volunteers
Introduce the public to the Museum and its programs through attendance at festivals, corporate wellness days and schools. Volunteers pass out materials and demonstrate nutrition basics by showing models of fat and muscle, plus sharing specific nutrition information on the salt, fat and sugar content of common foods.
Requirements: A pre-placement orientation, followed by an on-site, two-hour training. In addition, volunteers are paired with staff at events until a comfort level is reached. Must be at least 18, with a valid drivers license and ability to provide own transportation to off-site events (mileage reimbursed).
Health Education - Dissection Demonstrations and Classroom Work
Limited number of positions available for students in medical research, public health, dietetics, community health, medical and nursing professions seeking work-study, internships or volunteer opportunities in support of the Museum’s Scout Program, Home School Program and School Field Experience Program (see below). School Field Experience Assistant -- Fall Opportunity
Assist the School Field Trip Rotations Manager in directing/hosting the school groups through their daily schedule. Be part of a growing group of volunteers who enjoy students and teachers and want to be actively engaged in making their visit run smoothly. Mid October through Mid December, then again in February through May.
Boy and Girl Scout Classes
Assist an instructor or lead a Boy or Girl Scout class in First aid, Emergency Preparedness, My Body and Health Habits. Saturday and Sundays only.
Home School Classes
Assist an instructor or lead a classroom through a variety of health-related curriculum including Healthy Habits, Bone Basics and Dissections. Wednesday afternoons only.
School Field Experience Dissections -- Fall Opportuntity
In the 2009/2020 school year, students get an insider’s view of the eye! Be the Instructor who leads dissection demonstrations that explore the structure and function of the eyeball (using a cow eye) and compare human vision to the way that other organisms see the world. Content highlights will include light energy, scale, and adaptive characteristics including the predator/prey relationship.
Marketing and Customer Service
Customer Service Volunteers form the foundation for a positive Museum guest experience, whether through daily operations or special events. Trained volunteers staff the Admissions Desk, Retail Shop, and Information Desk and handle various Exhibit Hospitality assignments.

Groups - Teens and Adults
